Chapter 31: Spring
Nobody said anything for a long moment.
Then Mae said, "To who?"
"To whom," said Opal.
"To whom?"
Opal set her coffee cup down in its saucer without a sound.
"To the retired fire chief," she said. "He asked me at the vote count. Between the yeses and the noes. I said I'd think about it."
"And you thought," I said.
"I've thought. He's eighty-three. He bought six pies. A man can't wait forever."
Mae screamed again. The neighbor's dog barked again.
Nolan put down his fork, came around the table and kissed Opal on the cheek.
She swatted him with her napkin and went pink to the ears.
The town found out by lunch.
By April, Opal's wedding was running Alder Falls.
The Lions Club was doing the chairs. The Congregational church was doing the flowers.
The post office lady was making the cake, in four tiers, after a week of arguing with Opal about the fourth one.
Meanwhile I had a dam to fix.
On the second Monday in April, the town's crew went to work on the Alder Falls Rebuild Plan, five years late.
