Chapter 30: Tonight
He didn't say a word the whole way down the river road.
He drove with both hands on the wheel.
Every so often he looked over at me and then back at the road.
"You're not going to tell me in the truck," I said.
"No."
"You're making me wait."
"Five minutes," he said. "You can wait five minutes. I'm a slow talker."
The farmhouse was dark. Mae's bike lay on its side by the tire swing.
He came around and opened my door, the way he had at Christmas.
This time he didn't stand there holding it.
He took my hand and walked me up onto his own porch and turned me around under the light.
"Okay," he said.
He took a breath.
"You never once waited for somebody to make it safe first."
"You helped my kid with thirty cups of dirty water like it was the most important thing in Connecticut."
"You read every page. Of everything. You always have."
"I love you," Nolan said. "I think I started at the gate, when you didn't turn your car around."
"That's the other thing. That's my answer."
I stood there on his porch with the plant keys in my coat pocket and couldn't say anything at all.
"You're crying," he said.
"I have something in my eye."
"For how long?"
"For two hours," I said, and he laughed, and then I kissed him.
I kissed him against his own front door, with the porch light buzzing and the river loud below us.
He got the door open behind my back without looking.
We went through it backward and he kicked it shut.
His coat came off in the hall.
Mine got stuck on one arm and he swore at it and pulled, and the keys flew out of the pocket and hit the floor with a crash.
"That's the town's water," I said.
"The town can wait till morning."
He picked me up.
All of me, off the floor, with my legs around his waist.
