Chapter 14: The Gala
By eight on Saturday the lobby of Nicollet Hall was full of people who could afford to be there.
Women in long dresses stood under the chandelier with champagne.
Men in black tie shook Julius's hand and called him maestro.
I wore the black audition dress, because it was the only dress I owned that I had won a chair in.
Agatha squeezed past me in her concert blacks, with her oboe case under one arm.
"The recording is on the stage tech's drive," she said. "I also have a copy on a thumb drive in my coat."
"Why two?"
"I am a thorough woman."
The upstairs neighbor had Ellery for the night, with a plate of pancakes and orders to put her to bed by nine.
Ellery had hugged my knees at the door.
"Win," she said.
"I'm not playing tonight."
"Win anyway."
The first half was Brahms, and Julius conducted.
I sat in the fourth row of the house and watched my own empty chair.
