Widowed a Year, I Masked Up and Took Both of His Brothers novel · Chapter 23 of 24
Chapter 23: The Table Turns
By one o'clock my house was full of Scalisis, and I had not told any of them where to sit.
The oldest aunt arrived first, carrying a ham in a roasting pan with a dish towel over it.
Behind her came eleven more women, and the cousins, and the cousins' husbands, and a pyramid of fig cookies on a silver tray.
The cousin who had dropped his fork at the Sunday table carried a folding table down the hall in both arms.
"Where do you want it?" he asked me.
I stood in my own front room with a dish towel on my shoulder and understood what he was asking.
Three years ago I would have been told.
"In the sunroom," I said. "Under the windows. And put the daybed against the wall."
He nodded, and went.
It was how the whole afternoon went.
Every Scalisi who came through my door asked me what I wanted.
They set the tables where I pointed, and they put the bread where I said.
When I told one of the young cousins to take his cigarette outside, he went at once.
At two o'clock a taxi stopped at the curb.
