Chapter 15: Eyes
Phillip did not shout.
He folded the photograph once, put it in his breast pocket, and picked Junie up with the horse still under her arm.
"Where are we going?" she asked.
"To the safest room in the house."
"Is it Grandfather's?"
"It is."
Augustin was awake in his dressing gown at the door of his suite.
He looked at the child, and at the photograph his grandson held out, and his jaw set.
"The bed in my dressing room is a good one," he said. "I sleep like a cat. Nobody will cross that hall."
He took Junie's hand in his dry one.
"Come, young lady. You may inspect my cane collection."
"Do you have a sword one?"
"I have two."
They went in together, and the old man shut the door with a click.
Two guards took their places outside it, and a third went down to the garden with a flashlight.
My shoulders dropped.
Phillip led me back along the hall to his rooms.
His bedroom had a fire, a wide bed and a lamp on each side of it.
He stood in the middle of the carpet with his hands at his sides.
"Sit," he said.
I sat on the edge of the bed.
He pulled a chair up in front of me, close, knees almost touching mine, and held up one finger.
"Look at my eyes. Don't move yours. Tell me when you see my hand."
"Why?"
"Because I have been in a room with you for a week and I still don't know how big it is."
He moved his hand slowly in from the right, and I said "there."
He moved it in from the left, and I said "there" a good deal later.
He did it up, and down, and in every corner of the circle.
