Chapter 22: The Ring
Rosalind sat on a bench by the elevators with her coat folded in her lap and no makeup on.
Without it she looked younger and sharper, and a good deal more tired.
A young lawyer in a cheap suit stood beside her, and two of the tower's guards stood a polite distance off.
The lobby had filled up the way a lobby does when word travels.
Clerks leaned over a balcony rail.
A receptionist stopped typing.
Three reporters had been let in behind a rope, and a camera light blinked red.
Rosalind got to her feet when she saw me.
"I asked for you alone," she said.
"I'd rather not be alone with you."
"That's fair."
She took a breath.
"I won't make a scene. I've had enough of those."
Phillip stood at my left and did not speak.
I could see her face at the center of my sight, small and clear.
She held out her hand, palm up.
The brass band lay in it.
It was thin and dull and slightly bent, the cheapest ring in Michigan, bought for six dollars at the county fair.
