Chapter 5: Hold On

Elise slept through the examination.

The doctor stood by the bed and spoke to Jodie in a low voice.

"Her body is badly depleted after the birth. She had a major hemorrhage and she is prone to low blood sugar and fainting."

"She needs real food and rest. No more strong emotional shocks."

The nanny sighed beside the bed. "She never recovered after the baby came."

"For two weeks she could barely eat because of the pain. After that, the baby woke every night with a bad stomach, and she insisted on nursing her herself."

"She hasn't had one full night of sleep. And she kept working through all of it."

Jodie called Calvin. He did not pick up.

She called again and again.

In the end she took a photo of Elise in the hospital bed and sent it to him with one message.

Jodie: [You have twenty minutes to get here, or I'll be the one telling your wife to divorce you.]

Nothing came back.

Jodie looked at the thin shape under the blanket, and tears came before she could stop them.

Back in college, everyone had said Elise had married the best man of all of them.

Calvin was five years older. He had been her boss, and five years ago they had suddenly announced their wedding.

Elise wore her hair short and never dressed up.

Her marriage into the Kenyon family had shocked a lot of people.

Outsiders thought she lived in luxury with designer clothes and servants.

Jodie knew the truth. For five years Calvin had worked Elise to exhaustion, and his family had looked down on her at every chance.

Jodie had hoped a baby would change things.

She looked at the hospital bed now and saw no wealthy family anywhere.

She picked up her phone to call Calvin's parents.

Elise stirred. "Jodie. Water."

Jodie poured half a cup, lifted her up and watched her drink.
