Chapter 17: The Watch
I ran the four blocks in my overalls with black enamel drying on my knuckles.
The cabinet shop door was propped open with a plane.
Inside, the staff of The Annora Room stood in a loose half circle around the walnut table, still in their jackets, not talking.
Kendrick stood at the head of it, alone.
He wore the camel coat and a plain gray sweater.
For the first time since I had known him, he had not combed his hair.
His left sleeve had ridden up an inch.
On the wrist underneath was a band of skin so pale it looked peeled.
I knew what had lived there.
His father had put a gold watch on that wrist at his college graduation.
Kendrick had touched it before every speech he'd ever given.
Maddox stood by the bench with his arms crossed.
He met my eyes and gave one small nod, which meant, I haven't said a word to him.
On the walnut sat two bank envelopes and a long white receipt from a jeweler on Wisconsin Avenue.
I read it upside down.
One gold wristwatch, sapphire crystal, purchased from the owner. Twenty-three thousand four hundred dollars.
