Chapter 12: Nobody Else Gets the Baby
Nobody moved while the recording ran on.
"Mom signs it when?" Kendall asked, off the frame.
"A week after the surgery. Maybe two."
"Tell me again how it goes."
"Ken."
"I like hearing it. Tell me."
Brett sighed.
"The chart already says she's anxious. The portal note's in, and our family doctor will write his letter. Mom's seen her cry. She'll see more."
"And the surgery?"
"She's going to miss it. I cancelled it before the party, and she'll find out too late, and she'll panic. People who panic look bad in front of a judge."
"What if she shows up anyway?"
"Then I'll say she's refusing the spinal and the doctor can write that down. Either way. She's scared of needles."
I was scared of needles.
I had told him so, in the dark, a month into our marriage, because I trusted him.
"And then?" Kendall said.
"Then the lake house. Mom and Dad take her up there to rest. Rest turns into a facility. A few weeks, a nice one, with a garden."
"And I have the baby."
"We have the baby."
"I've waited eleven years for this, Brett."
There was a pause, and I could hear a chair creak.
"I know."
"Eleven years of doctors. And she gets pregnant in a month and cries about her ankles."
"I know, baby."
"It isn't fair that she can carry him and I can't."
"It's not fair," Brett said. "That's why we fix it."
The picture shook, the way a phone shakes when somebody leans against the couch.
Then Kendall laughed, softly, the laugh I had heard through the door.
