Chapter 11: He Didn't Stop Recording
Dale Scofield stood in June's doorway with his team cap crushed in both hands.
He was a stocky man with a buzz cut, and his polo shirt had a coffee stain on the chest.
He looked like he hadn't slept since Thursday.
"Mrs. Rigby," he said. "I mean Ms. Lowry. I don't know what to call you."
"Millicent."
"Millicent. I'm Dale."
"I know who you are. You counted down the bet."
He flinched.
June stood behind me with her arms folded and her chin up.
Dillon had stayed on the balcony and was pretending to look at the dead basil.
"Come in," I said. "Sit. Don't touch anything that moves."
Dale sat on the very edge of the armchair and put his cap on his knee.
"I saw it on the wall today," he said. "At the shower. I was in the back. I came because Brett asked me to, to look supportive."
"Of course he did."
"I've known him since we were nineteen. I've known him longer than I've known my wife."
"Dale," June said. "Get to it."
"Right."
He took a long breath.
"On Thursday I thought it was a bit. That's the honest truth. Brett said, 'Let's play a game, whether she'll leave me.' It was a bunch of guys and some beers. I thought nobody was going to get hurt."
"I was upstairs," I said. "I was thirty-eight weeks pregnant."
"I know."
"I could hear you laughing through the vents."
His shoulders sagged.
"I didn't think about you at all," he said. "That's what I can't stand. I didn't once think about the woman upstairs, until I watched you stand next to that screen in a green dress and I thought, that's the woman I was betting against."
