Chapter 10: The Rule
Brett caught us in the parking lot, three cars from June's.
He had run out the side door without his jacket, and he was breathing hard.
"Millicent. Stop. Give me two minutes."
"No."
"Give me the phone."
He reached for my bag.
June moved between us so quickly that she knocked him back a step with her shoulder.
"Touch her and I'll take your arm off at the elbow," she said. "I'm an ICU nurse. I know exactly where it comes off."
"This is between my wife and me."
"Your wife has a hospital bed on Sunday and a sister with a car. You've got a shirt with no jacket."
Brett looked at me over her shoulder.
His face had changed.
All the warmth that had been there for two years was gone.
"You waited a week," he said.
"What?"
"You heard it Thursday. You came back to the hospital Friday, you sat through dinner Sunday, you let Mom cry at that table. And you said nothing."
"You wanted me to say something?"
"A normal woman would have screamed."
"I'm sorry I wasn't more normal."
"A normal woman doesn't film her husband through a door and sit on it for over a week and then spring it on a hundred people." He spread his hands, and his voice rose. "Do you hear how that sounds?"
I could see two valets by the entrance staring at us.
A woman in a yellow coat had stopped with her car door open.
"It sounds like I had proof," I said.
"It sounds like you planned it. It sounds like someone who isn't thinking clearly."
"Brett."
"People are going to say that, Millie. People are going to say it, and they're going to be right."
I understood then that he had already started writing it.
