Chapter 9: The Shower

The Ridgeline Club ballroom was pink and white from floor to ceiling.

There were balloon arches over the doors and a towering cake shaped like a diaper bag.

A hundred and twenty people stood in clusters holding champagne flutes of sparkling cider.

I walked in on June's arm in the green dress and a pair of compression socks nobody could see.

Brett saw me from across the room.

He crossed the floor with his arms already open.

"Millie. You came."

"I did."

"I'm so glad." He kissed my cheek, and his mouth was cold. "Mom's been up since five. Please, be gentle with her."

"I'll try."

"You look beautiful."

He tried to take my elbow, and June stepped into the gap before his fingers landed.

"I've got her," she said.

At the far end of the ballroom, on a stage with a podium, a white screen hung from the ceiling.

Beside it, at a long table with a laptop on it, a tall man in a gray collared shirt and a visitor lanyard was staring at nothing with great concentration.

He glanced at me once, and then he looked at the laptop again.

I almost laughed.

Brett's mother found me by the cake.

She held both my hands, and she did not say a word about dinner.

"I'm glad you're here," she said. "I told Kendall to give you room."

"That's kind."

"She's very worried about you."

I looked past her.

Kendall stood by the gift table in a blush-pink dress, arranging a card on a box.

She had done her hair in loose curls, and she was chatting with an older woman about the cake.

When she saw me, she put one hand over her heart.

The program started at two-fifteen.

Brett's mother thanked everyone for coming.

A cousin read a poem.

Then Kendall tapped a glass with a spoon and walked up to the podium with a folded card in her hand.
