Chapter 8: What to Wear to a Shower
By Friday night I had four unanswered texts from Brett and one from a number I didn't know.
The unknown one said: "It's Dale Scofield. I need to talk to you about Thursday. Not Brett's side."
I didn't answer it.
I read Brett's out loud to June, because they made her laugh.
"Millie, please call me. I'm sorry about the dinner."
"Millie, I miss you. The house is so quiet."
"Millie, Mom's heartbroken. Think about her."
"Millie, I'm still your husband."
"He's pacing the kitchen with a glass of wine," June said. "Look at the timestamps. Every one is after eleven."
"I'm not answering."
"Good."
"I'm going to the shower."
June had been eating cereal out of the box.
She stopped with her hand halfway to her mouth.
"You're what?"
"Tomorrow, two o'clock. His mother put my name on a cream-colored card, and a hundred and twenty people are going to show up for me. It's the biggest room I'll ever get."
"Millie."
"It has a ballroom projector. The invitation says there'll be a slideshow of baby photos from our families."
June set down the box.
"The room," she said slowly.
"The room."
"You're going to play it."
"I'm going to play it on the wall, thirty feet wide, in front of everyone he's ever lied to."
She stood up and walked once around the coffee table.
Then she pointed at me with a finger that had a hospital tape bandage wrapped around it.
"I pick the lighting."
"You pick the lighting."
"I'll need someone to run the file. If it freezes, the whole thing's dead."
"I can't be at the laptop. I'm going to be at the microphone."
"So we need a man with a lanyard."
I blinked at her.
"Nobody questions a man with a lanyard," June said. "He walks up to the AV table, he looks bored, he plugs in a stick. Done."
