Chapter 4: Three Names I Know

My grandfather's tackle shop opens at five in the morning, and I was sitting on a bucket of nightcrawlers by four.

Amos Schuler came down the back stairs in his flannel shirt and his cap and looked at me.

He didn't ask why I was there.

He turned on the coffee machine, took the folder out of my hands and put on his reading glasses.

"Colin's mother mailed me an invitation once," he said, "to her book club's summer luncheon. I used it to light the stove."

"Grandpa."

"I'm reading."

He read for a long time, turning the pages with one wet thumb.

I told him the rest while he did it, the cards and the toast and the supper and the check.

When I finished, he put the folder down on the counter.

"Three names I know," he said.

"Out of five hundred and nineteen?"

"One's the bank that wouldn't lend your mother the money for her first boat. One's the county clerk who lost my deed in 1998." He tapped the page. "And one's the preacher who wouldn't bury your grandmother on a Sunday."

"Those are the three?"

"They're the three I'd bring a shovel for."

I laughed, and then I was crying, and he let me, and he kept his hand on the back of my neck.

"You cancelled it in front of his staff," he said after a while.
