Chapter 5: The Bridesmaids' Lunch

The bridesmaids' lunch had been on my calendar since August.

I had booked the back room at the Harbor Grill, paid the deposit, and ordered six little gift bags with a silver charm in each.

On Sunday at noon I walked in carrying the banker's box, and Conroy walked in behind me carrying the second one.

He set it on the sideboard and went back out to wait in his truck.

I watched his shoulders until the door closed.

Then I turned around.

Six women sat at the long table in their good dresses.

Four were teachers and cousins who had said yes to being bridesmaids in the spring.

The fifth was Lacey's mother, in a lavender jacket, who had been told this was a celebration.

The sixth was Lacey, seated beside her.

She had put on makeup, but it hadn't hidden anything.

"Della!" one of my cousins said, jumping up. "Is it true? Somebody sent me a video from the showroom."

"It's true," I said.

"Oh, honey."

"Sit. Please. I booked this lunch for the wedding party, and I'm going to use it." I put the box on the table and took off the lid. "I'd like to read you something."

I took out a card and read it in a steady voice.

"Together with their families, Colin James Rutledge and Lacey Anne Drummond request the honor of your presence at their wedding."

Nobody said anything.

Lacey's mother turned her head slowly.
