The Hancock County courthouse smelled of floor wax and old paper.
The hearing room was full by nine on Tuesday, and people stood along the walls in their church clothes.
They had come from three townships to watch.
I sat at the front table in a maternity dress the color of cornflowers.
At twenty weeks, I had gone from hiding a belly to carrying it.
Nolan sat on my left and my brother on my right.
Behind us sat Winifred, with her cane planted between her feet.
My father sat at the other table with a public defender, in the same clean shirt.
He looked smaller than he had on the porch.
The judge was a woman in her sixties with reading glasses on a chain.
She had known my mother, and she did not hide it.
"We are here on three matters," she said.
"The probate of the will of the late Mrs. Moser.
"The petition to void a note.
"And the plea of Orrin Moser to forgery in the third degree."
