Chapter 23: The Wedding
We married on the last Saturday of October, in the orchard behind the farmhouse.
My mother had planted the trees the spring I was born.
They hung heavy with red apples, and the grass between the rows was gold with fallen leaves.
At thirty-three weeks I was the size of a hay wagon, and I had never felt so beautiful.
My dress was cream wool with a wide skirt, cut by the woman from accounts, who turned out to sew.
My braid was pinned up with wildflowers from the north field.
"Stop fidgeting," Winifred said.
She stood behind me in the farmhouse kitchen, straightening a strand of hair with her dry, careful fingers.
"You look like your mother."
"You never met my mother."
"I met her in the photograph on your dresser," she said.
"That's enough."
Through the window, I could see the folding chairs in the orchard.
Two hundred people sat on them.
Half the fourth floor had driven up in a rented bus, and the other half were my neighbors.
The pastor stood under the biggest tree with his Bible.
My aunt sat in the second row, with a tin of pies on her lap, and she would not meet my eye.
