Chapter 13: The Dead Son Speaks
Nobody in the room breathed.
Then the color came back into Marguerite's face, all at once.
"This is obscene," she said.
She rose from her chair, one hand flat on the cloth.
"My son died in a desert twelve years ago.
"I will not have a stranger in a stolen vest wear his face at his brother's table."
"Mother," Dev said.
"Do not call me that."
A murmur ran down the long tables.
Two hundred people were leaning forward with their forks in the air.
Weston sat rigid beside Imogen with his hands under the table.
He did not say a word.
"Remove him," Marguerite said to the two men at Dev's elbows.
They looked at him.
Dev looked at them.
"Gentlemen," he said, almost kindly. "Take your hands off me or ask her why she is afraid."
The hands came off.
Marguerite turned to the staff lined along the wall.
"Call the kitchen. I want this man out."
