Chapter 14: Cuffs Again
The holding cell at the county jail smelled of bleach and old coffee.
I sat on the steel bench with my wrist still ringing from the cuffs.
Through the wire glass in the door I could see the long corridor and the clock above the desk.
It was ten past nine.
The door buzzed at nine thirty, and Dev stood in it with a deputy at his shoulder.
The deputy looked like he wanted to be anywhere else.
"Five minutes," the deputy said, and left us the width of the doorway.
Dev did not come in.
He stood with both hands flat against the frame.
"One call," he said, very low. "The colonel's people are four minutes from here. This building will be empty by ten."
"No."
"Clover."
"If you do it, the story is that I needed an army to get out," I said.
"The Harlows get to say that I'm your creature.
"The cell door opens, but the paper stays true.
"I want it to open because they were wrong."
