Chapter 16: The Complaint
The old man's house in Euclid had a green porch and a roof that had lost a third of its shingles.
The other candidate stood beside my car on Monday morning with a clipboard and a perfect smile.
"Don't mind me," he said. "I'm just here to learn."
"You're here to score me."
"Same thing, really."
He held the clipboard against his chest, and I saw the top line already written.
It said, "Warmth: ?"
The old man opened the door before we knocked.
He was eighty, with a cardigan buttoned wrong and a cane hooked over his forearm.
"You're the adjuster," he said. "Come in. Both of you. I made coffee, and it's terrible."
His kitchen was small and clean, with a plastic tablecloth and a single cup set out for each of us.
I put my file on the table.
The other candidate smiled at the old man until the old man looked at him, and then at me, and then back at his coffee.
"My wife's name was on the policy, you know. She did all the paper. I don't understand any of it."
