Chapter 17: The Porch
The daughter's house was in Willoughby, a blue split-level with a swing set in the yard.
The emergency contact in the old man's file had given me the street.
I parked at the curb on Wednesday afternoon and did not get out.
Tobias sat in the passenger seat with his sketchbook closed on his knee.
"You can wait here," I said.
"I'm not coming in."
"You came anyway."
"I'm going to sit in your car and be quiet. Is that a favor?"
"It's a rule."
"Then I'm following the rules." He looked at the house. "Your hands are on the wheel at ten and two, and your knuckles are pale."
"Is that useful?"
"It means you care. You don't need me to tell you that."
I got out.
The front door opened before I reached the steps.
A woman about my age stood in the doorway with her arms folded and a dish towel on her shoulder.
She had her father's chin.
"I know who you are," she said.
"I'm Lin Pellam, from Lakeshore Mutual. I'm sorry to come to your house."
