By the last Sunday of November, I had called all forty names on Bressler's list.
Twenty-two picked up.
Eleven hung up when I said where I was from.
Ten said they would come to the panel and sit in the back and see.
The last one, a man in Garfield Heights, shouted about insurance companies for twelve minutes.
Then he asked if I had eaten lunch.
I wrote that on a sticky note and put it on my fridge.
It was the best call of the week.
That Sunday afternoon Tobias stood in my kitchen with a roll of drawing paper under his arm, looking at the fridge.
"This is a nice flat," he said.
"It has two rooms and a radiator that bangs."
"It's tidy."
"It's empty."
"That's what I said." He grinned, and set the paper on my table. "It looks like you."
It was the first time he had been in my place, and I had cleaned it twice that morning.
I had hidden the cereal, because he would have read something into it.
He sat on my one good chair and unrolled the paper.
