Chapter 15: Bianca at the Door

The doorbell rang at ten past eight on Monday morning.

Trevor had left for Towson an hour before, whistling.

I was standing at the sink in his old T-shirt, drinking coffee and thinking about Nolan's kitchen counter.

I opened the front door.

Bianca stood on my stoop with a cardboard tray and two cups.

She wore sunglasses, a gray trench coat and no lipstick.

I had never seen her face bare, and it made her look about twenty-five and very tired.

"I brought you a latte," she said. "I didn't know how you take it."

"With milk."

"I'll remember."

"What do you want, Bianca?"

"Five minutes. You can keep the door open if you're scared."

I let her in.

She sat at my kitchen table, in the chair where Trevor had read me my results for four years.

She put her cup down and her hand shook, and a little coffee slopped onto the wood.

"I asked him," she said.

"Asked who what?"

"Don't." She took off her sunglasses. "I asked him at two this morning what happened in June 2016. He laughed. He said you were messing with my head, and he said I should be ashamed for letting you."

"And did you let me?"

"He's never laughed like that before," Bianca said. "He laughs when he lies. I'd never noticed."

I sat down across from her.

"Trevor told me you couldn't have children," she said. "That was the reason he couldn't leave you. He said it would destroy you, and you'd have nobody."
