Chapter 16: The Kitchen

Nolan's POV

Jo called me at 8:41 on Monday morning, and she didn't say hello.

"Trevor's at my house. Bianca's here. Come now."

Then the line went dead, and I was already moving.

It's twelve minutes from Harbor East to Hampden if you obey the lights.

I did it in seven.

I left the car crooked at the curb behind Trevor's truck, and I didn't remember turning off the engine.

The front door stood open.

I heard Bianca before I saw her, and it was a sound I had never heard from her in six years.

She was crying, short and ugly, with no performance in it at all.

I walked down the hall to the kitchen.

My wife was on the floor with her back against the cabinets, one hand over her mouth, and a smear of blood on her lip.

The table had been shoved crooked.

A green notebook lay open on the tiles near her foot.

Trevor stood in the middle of the room with both hands wrapped around Jo's left wrist.

It was the same wrist.

I knew exactly where his thumb was pressing, because I had kissed the yellow bruise it left three days before.

"There he is," Trevor said. His face was wet and shining. "The savior. Is this what you wanted, Draper? My wife in your bed and my girlfriend in your pocket?"

"Let go of her."

"Or what?"

I stood motionless.

There's a room in me that I have kept shut since I was nineteen, and what I wanted to do to him was in that room.
