Chapter 17: The Hunt

There was more on the back of the card.

EVERY GUEST AND EVERY SERVANT HUNTS.

THE BEDS ARE CLOSED UNTIL DAWN.

WHOEVER HOLDS THE FOX AT DAWN ENDS THE ANOMALY.

"Holds," the boy said. "What does holds mean?"

"It means he doesn't have to do it himself," Penny said. "He just has to hand me over."

"Hand you over to what?" I said.

Nobody answered that.

At eleven o'clock the clock in the hall struck, and every bed in Gravemoor folded up into the walls.

I heard it happen all over the house. Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.

The nursery mattresses rolled themselves up and stood in the corner.

The nursery door swung open on its own and stayed open.

Mouse stood in the middle of the floor, hugging her rabbit.

"I didn't do that," she said. "I don't like it."

"I know, baby."

I put my sneakers on and laced them double.

Penny and the boy were already standing by the door. The brave one, with her pillow. The father from Mirror Night. The skinny guy.

"The card says every guest hunts," Penny said. "So we're hunting."

"Penny."

"I'm going to hunt you very slowly. Right next to you. For seven hours."

"Same," said the boy.

The brave one hit him with her pillow, gently. "Same."

Ambrose met us at the top of the stairs.

He didn't have his head on. He was carrying it at his side by the hair, the way he used to on night one.
