Chapter 18: Fading

I grabbed his hands in mine.

They were still there. Cool and solid, but light.

"Can you feel that?"

"Yes." He flexed his fingers. "Less than yesterday."

Penny came pounding up the stairs with the boy right behind her.

She took one look at the sunlight going through his palms and said a word I'd never heard before.

"Is that Latin?" the boy asked.

"It's Dayton," Penny said.

She turned Ambrose's wrist over and pressed two fingers where a pulse should be.

"I can't feel anything. Is that normal for you?"

"I'm not certain I've had a pulse since 2015."

"Great. Love that. Very helpful."

He kept his sleeves rolled down and his hands in his pockets, so the guests wouldn't see.

His head started slipping again. Every hour or so it would tip, and he'd catch it, and I'd set it back.

It stayed less each time.

"It's the line," he said. "I crossed it. The house is keeping its rule."

"Then we get the book and tear the rule out."

"Daisy..."

"Don't. Don't you dare say it's fine."

He didn't say it.
