Chapter 10: Wyatt's POV

Wyatt's POV

The Hallstrom boardroom had a long glass table and a view of the river.

I had sat at it once as a founder, in jeans, eating takeout on a folding chair.

Now I sat at it in a suit, and Gavin stood at the head of it, ready to hang a woman.

It was Friday morning.

The waiver deadline had passed at nine, and Deanna hadn't signed.

I knew because she had texted me a picture of the unsigned page at 8:59, with a single line under it: "Told you."

I'd read it four times in the elevator.

"Colleagues," Gavin said. "I'll be brief."

He put a folder in front of each director.

The company's chief financial officer, a nervous man with a gray mustache, wouldn't look up from his.

"The audit packet closes tomorrow," Gavin said. "As you've read, four hundred and twelve thousand dollars was moved into an account held in my wife's name. I'm asking the board to authorize us to turn that evidence over to the authorities."

"Soon to be ex-wife," said a woman at the end of the table.

"Yes." He looked down at his hands. "It's the hardest thing I've done."

I watched him do it.

He was good.

He had always been good, from the first week we shared a garage in Saint Paul and he talked a landlord out of a deposit by crying in his office.

I had laughed then.

I'd thought of it as a skill, like being able to whistle.

"I have one question," I said.

"Wyatt." He turned with his gentlest face. "Of course."

"When did the company freeze Deanna Hallstrom's personal cards?"
