Chapter 9: The Wrong Woman

The elevator in Joanna's building was still broken on Thursday, so I took the stairs.

On the third-floor landing, a woman in a gray hoodie was sitting on the step with her knees pulled up.

She had no makeup on, and her auburn hair was shoved under a baseball cap.

It took me a second to know her.

"Kinsley," I said.

She stood up too fast and held the rail.

"Please don't scream," she said. "I came alone. I swear I did."

"How did you find this building?"

"Gavin has your friend's address on a list." She swallowed. "I need five minutes."

I should have gone up the stairs and locked the door.

Instead I sat down on the step above hers, because her hands wouldn't stay still.

"Say it," I said.

"I believed you took the money."

"Okay."

"He showed me the statement. Your name was on it. He said he'd been protecting you for months and couldn't anymore." She pressed her palms against her eyes. "And then you stood up in that ballroom and asked who took the picture, and I've been awake for two nights."

"Did you take it?"

"No. I'd never been in your apartment. I told you the truth."

"Then who sent it?"

"I don't know." Her voice went high. "That's what I came to say. There was a number. It texted me in August, before I ever posted anything. It said it was a friend of yours who was worried about you."

I kept my face still.

"A friend of mine."

"It said you were depressed. It said you'd stopped answering anyone and that Gavin couldn't reach you." She was talking quickly now. "It said if the world saw what you were doing to yourself, you'd get help. It sent me pictures. It told me what to caption them."
