Chapter 13: A Mortal Queen
I dropped to my knees on the cold stone beside him.
The sheet slid off my shoulder and I didn't care.
"Corin. Where is he?"
"Montcalm." He coughed, and it came up red. "Six of them. They had a key to the lower door."
"Where are you hurt?"
"Everywhere they could reach." He tried to sit up and failed. "It'll close by tomorrow night. Leave it."
I pressed the sheet against the worst of it, under his ribs.
It soaked through in seconds.
"He was still beating," Corin said. "His heart. That's why they came tonight. They knew."
"He could have fought them."
"He could have shouted." Corin's eyes went to the open door behind me. "He didn't want them coming in to you. He walked down to them quiet, with his hands out."
I stared at him.
"He said not to wake you," Corin said. "I'm disobeying."
I left him on the step with the sheet pressed under his hand.
In my room I dressed in the black gown in the dark and got the hooks wrong twice.
