"Show me," I said.
"Come in and see."
"He comes out first."
Emmeline laughed.
It was the laugh she'd used on the landlord when he came about the rent.
"Ella, you don't get to set terms in this house. You never set terms in ours."
She stepped back and held the door wide.
I looked once over my shoulder.
Corin was bent over his saddle with one hand on his ribs, watching me.
Twenty swords shone in the lamplight behind him.
None of them could come up these steps without starting a war between houses.
I went in.
The Montcalm hall was all gold.
Gold leaf on the ceiling. Gold silk on the walls. A gold floor so bright I could see my black skirts in it.
Isadora's whole household stood along the walls.
Lords in gold coats. Ladies with gold combs. Thralls in grey with their sleeves rolled up, the way mine had been on Tithe Night.
At the far end, on a raised chair, sat Isadora.
At her feet knelt the king of Varrow.
They'd chained his wrists behind him to an iron ring in the floor.
