Chapter 15: The Cellar

The cellar under House Montcalm had been a wine store once.

The racks were still there along the walls.

Now they held glass vials instead of bottles, in neat rows, with gold wax on their stoppers.

Every night there were more of them.

Every night they were mine.

I had a cot, a blanket, a bucket and a chain from my ankle to the bottom of the stair.

The chain was long enough to reach the cot and the bucket.

It wasn't long enough to reach the door.

On the first night I stared at the steps up to it.

Fourteen.

On the second night I watched the vials.

After that I stopped watching anything.

Emmeline brought my food herself.

Bread, cheese, a cup of watered wine and a pear.

She always brought a pear.

"For your colour," she said, setting the tray on the cot. "Lady Montcalm says you've gone pale. It changes the taste."

"How would she know? She drinks it at dawn and then hides behind a curtain for the rest of the day."

"She stood at the window for an hour this morning." Emmeline sat on the bottom step and arranged her red skirts over her knees. "An hour, Ella."
