They brought me up at noon.

Two mortal thralls in grey took the chain off the cellar wall and led me up the stone steps.

At the top the light hit me so hard I had to shut my eyes.

I hadn't seen the sun in four days.

House Montcalm's courtyard was square and paved in white, with high walls on every side.

The sun stood straight over it.

There was no shade in the middle at all.

Along three walls they'd put up long black awnings on poles, and under them, in the shadow, sat the buyers.

Envoys.

I'd never seen one.

The Eastern envoy was tall and thin, in grey silk, with a veil of black gauze over his whole face against the light.

The Southern envoy was a broad woman wrapped in red, with rings on every finger and a parasol over her even under the awning.

There were others behind them.

Northern furs in high summer. A lady with a white painted face who fanned herself without stopping.
