Chapter 17: In Front of the Envoys

"Go back!" I screamed at him.

He didn't.

I yanked at the chain.

It held at the top of the post, on its iron ring.

I stood on my toes and looked up.

The thralls hadn't locked it.

They'd only hooked the last link over the ring, the way you'd hang a bucket in a well.

"Hold her!" Isadora shouted. "You, hold her!"

One of the grey thralls came back up onto the platform.

He was a big man with a soft, sorry face.

He took me round the waist from behind.

I reached down into my hem.

My needle was still there.

I drove it into the back of his hand to the eye.

He howled and let go.

I jumped, caught the chain above the hook, and lifted the link off the ring.

Then I was off the platform and running across the white stone with the chain dragging behind me.

Kaelen had stopped walking.

He'd gone down on one knee in the middle of the courtyard.

The smoke was coming off him in threads now, from his hands, his face, his hair.
