Chapter 19: Envoys
The Eastern envoy left Varrow the night after the auction.
So did the Southern envoy, and the furs, and the lady with the painted face.
They came back on the night of the new moon.
They didn't come back alone.
I watched them from the tower window with Kaelen at my shoulder.
Three hundred riders came up the east road under the grey banner of the Eastern Court.
Two hundred more came up from the river under the red of the South.
They camped in the square at the foot of the white steps, right where the pyre had been.
Their fires burned all along the bottom of the hill.
"They want to frighten the lower town," Kaelen said.
"It's working."
Needle Row had shuttered every window by sunset.
I'd watched that too.
He took my left hand and turned it over.
My finger was still bare.
He'd brought me a ring the week before.
Gold, with a pearl as big as a pea.
I'd given it back to him.
"I want mine," I'd said. "The iron one. Not a new one."
