I wore the black gown.
Corin had found it pressed and hanging on my door when I came down.
I didn't ask who'd pressed it.
The white steps were packed from the great doors to the edge of the shade.
Every great house of Varrow stood under the deep portico in its colours.
The envoys stood with them, the Eastern in grey, the Southern in red.
Below, in the square, the Eastern and Southern escorts had come out of their tents in hooded cloaks to watch from under canvas.
All of Needle Row was there too.
They'd come up from the lower town in the dark and packed in along the bottom wall of the square.
Mortals in their work clothes. Women with babies on their hips.
I'd never seen the lower town come up the hill except on Tithe Night.
The seven councillors sat on their bench at the end of the portico.
Kaelen stood at the very edge of the shade, at the top of the steps, with Corin beside him.
