I'd told him I would move.

I didn't have time.

She hit me.

We went down together onto the white stone, her on top of me, the case kicked over and vials smashing all around us.

Her hands were in my hair.

They were hot.

Not warm like Kaelen's.

I got my forearm up across my chest just as her teeth came down.

They sank into my sleeve and the arm under it.

I screamed.

Smoke poured off her face into mine.

I couldn't see.

I couldn't breathe for the smell of it, burnt silk and burnt hair and something worse.

She was dragging at my arm with her teeth, trying to get past it to my neck.

"Mine," she was saying around it. "Mine, mine, give it to me."

I heard the court shouting.

I heard the eldest councillor's voice, high and cracked.

"Majesty! The law!"

Then I heard boots on the steps.
