Chapter 24: His Queen
"No," I said into his burnt hair.
I didn't move my hand.
"No. You don't get to. Not on these steps."
Up on the portico someone began to weep.
I didn't look to see who.
I kept my palm flat on his back.
I waited, tracking each passing second.
One.
Two.
Three.
On seven, it came.
Thump.
So faint I thought I'd made it up.
Then again.
Thump.
Then steady, and louder, and under my hand, and in my own chest where he was pressed against it.
He drew a breath.
It rattled.
Then it didn't.
I held on to him and shook.
He lifted his head.
The blisters along his jaw were closing as I watched.
The black at the edges of his ears went red, then pink, then pale.
His eyes opened, a hand's width from mine.
Grey.
Then blue came into them from the edges, slow, like morning into a window.
"You're bleeding," he said.
"You're alive."
"Am I?" He looked down at my hand on his chest. "Yes. I suppose I am."
Then he kissed me, there on the bottom step in front of everyone.
My blood was on his mouth and the sun was full on both of us.
When I lifted my head, the square was on its knees.
