Chapter 11: The Old Doctor
The old doctor lived in a brick house in Parma with an oxygen tank in the front hall.
A tired woman opened the door, looked at Adriano's face, and went white.
"He's very sick," she said. "He can't have visitors."
"I know who he is to my family," Adriano said, quietly. "I'm not here to hurt him."
She looked at me, standing beside him with my hand on my stomach.
Something in her face gave way.
"Ten minutes," she said.
The doctor sat propped on pillows in a front room full of medical books.
He was seventy-two and looked ninety, yellow as old paper, with a clear tube running to his nose.
His eyes found Adriano, and stayed.
"I wondered when you'd come," he said.
His voice was a whisper.
"Eleven years," Adriano said. "You looked me in the face."
"I did."
"You told me I would never have a child."
"I did."
"It wasn't true."
The old man closed his eyes.
"The scans were clean," he said. "The bomb hurt your stomach and your arm."
"The fragments missed everything that mattered. You were luckier than any man I ever treated."
