Chapter 12: Sunday Table
On Sunday morning, I stood in front of the lake house mirror in a dark green dress and could not stop my hands from shaking.
Adriano came up behind me and caught them.
"You don't have to come," he said.
"Don't be stupid."
"You're carrying my child, and he's setting a table."
"I'm carrying your child and I'm going to watch him lose," I said.
He turned me around.
His eyes were dark, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.
"I want you before we go," he said. "I don't know how this ends, and I want you."
"Then take me."
He backed me against the bedroom wall and kissed me hard.
I got my hands into his hair, and he got his under my dress.
He shoved the green silk up to my waist, ripped my underwear at the hip, and lifted me.
My shoulders hit the wall, and I locked my ankles behind him.
He freed himself with one hand.
There was no tenderness in it, and I didn't want any.
He pushed in, hard, to the root, and I cried out and bit his shoulder through his shirt.
"Quiet," he said, a rough breath against my ear. "Cinzia's down the hall."
