Chapter 23: The Gate
I was dressed in two minutes and downstairs in three.
Rafe was beside me the whole way, his hand near the gun he had borrowed from the night guard.
The front hall was already full.
The men stood in their shirtsleeves and undershirts, with their coats thrown on and their shoes unlaced.
Two had pistols.
The man in the blue tie looked at me.
"Do we go out?" he said.
"Yes. All of you."
"With guns?"
"With eyes," I said. "I want you to see it."
The courtyard was wet and white under the gate lamp.
Beyond the iron bars, in the street, stood a man in a camel coat with the collar turned up.
His hands were wrapped in dirty gauze, both of them, and his hair hung in his face.
In his left hand, held with the four fingers left to it, he had a pistol.
"There she is," Silvio said. "My bride."
"Put it down."
"My father took my name away."
"He took it, yes."
"He put me on a farm in Wisconsin with two men watching. I took the keys off one of them."
