St. Michael's was full by ten, on Saturday, November fourteenth, the date my father first gave Silvio.
I stood at the back of the nave in a plain ivory dress with Marisa's arm tucked through mine.
She wore her good gray silk and her glasses on their chain, and she was crying with great dignity.
"Don't you dare," she said, when I looked at her.
"I'm not."
"You're about to."
"You first."
"Your father paid for this church," Marisa said. "He paid for every candle. I intend to enjoy every one."
The organ started.
The men in black suits stood up in the pews, and the women beside them turned their heads.
At the far end of the aisle, under the high windows, Rafe stood at the altar rail.
He wore a gray suit.
It was the first time I had ever seen him in a color.
He had no earpiece and no gun, and his hands hung at his sides.
When he saw me, he stopped being able to hold his face still.
I watched it happen from sixty feet away.
I walked.
I walked the whole aisle at the speed my feet wanted, past the capos and their wives.
Old Brandolini sat alone in the last pew.
Marisa had sent him a card, and he had not dared refuse.
He stood when I passed.
