Chapter 4: Not Tonight

Angelo caught his brother by the front of the shirt and pulled him inside before he could say another word.

"Gelo, I swear, I didn't know she was here."

"Quiet."

"I just came to tell you, I can't keep doing this, I can't..."

"Tomas."

It was the vendor voice again, and Tomas shut his mouth.

He swayed in the hall, smelling like a bar, his eyes red.

Then he looked at me over his brother's shoulder.

"Tala." His voice cracked on my name. "I'm sorry about that night. About the lobby. I should have told you first, before anything."

My stomach dropped.

"Told me what?"

"Not tonight," Angelo said.

"Told me what, Tomas?"

"He's drunk," Angelo said. "He doesn't know what he's saying."

"I know exactly what I'm saying, I..."

"Upstairs. The room at the end. Sleep."

He steered his brother toward the stairs with a hand on the back of his neck.

Tomas went.

At the landing he turned around and looked at me one more time, like a man looking at something he had broken.

Then he was gone.

Angelo came back down alone and I was still standing in the hall on my crutches.

"What did he mean?"

"He's drunk."

"Who is she? He said she told him I was never coming back here. Who is she?"

"I don't know."

"You do."

"Tala, it's one in the morning."

"You always say that."

He frowned.

"Say what?"

"Later. Not now. Not tonight."

My voice came out sharper than I meant.
