The lodge doors banged open behind us, and half the pack spilled onto the porch in coats and blankets.
Someone had rung the bell, and nobody had told them why.
The man in the fur collar did not wait for quiet.
"Ridgeback," he said, "your Alpha has worn a Warden's iron for six years and a Warden's secret for two."
"He has a mate, and he hid her from the law."
Murmurs ran along the porch.
Brida stepped forward in her white coat, with the daisy bright on her throat.
"Daisy has been living under his roof for a week," she said, in her sweetest voice.
"We all know what a man like that does with a broken girl."
"Brida," said the man in the fur collar, "let me speak."
He said it fondly.
He turned to Nolan.
"Show them your wrist, Brandvold."
Nolan did not look at me.
He walked down the steps into the headlights, and he held out his left arm with the sleeve pushed back.
