Chapter 14: Nine Questions
Question two came in the lodge kitchen at one in the morning.
He was making tea, and I did not trust it.
"Do you have a middle name?" I asked.
"No."
"Everyone has a middle name."
"The hall ran out," said Nolan.
"They gave us a first name and a last name, and the last name was the street."
I looked at the kettle.
"Brandvold is a street?"
"It was a street with a bakery on it.
"The bakery smelled like bread, and I picked it."
I wrote that down in my head, and I did not let my face move.
"Question three.
"What's the worst thing you've ever cooked?"
"Oatmeal.
"It set.
"Mavis took the pot out to the fence, and the oatmeal stood up by itself."
A sound came out of me that was mostly a laugh.
He heard it, and he looked at the kettle very hard.
"Question four," I said.
"Did you practice my mother's death words?"
