Chapter 23: The Altar

The Tattnall lawn had been turned into a cathedral without a roof.

Three hundred white chairs ran down both sides of a white aisle.

At the far end stood an arch of white roses taller than a man.

I sat in the third row with Sullivan, in the green dress, because Corinna had asked me to wear it.

"It's the only color she'll know in a crowd," she had texted.

His hand was in mine on the seat between us, and neither of us pretended otherwise.

Mom sat in the front row in her best navy suit, with a cane across her knees she had never needed before today.

Lavinia stood at the end of that row in gold silk.

She had spotted Sullivan an hour ago, and since then she had smiled the smile of a woman who has already won.

"You came," she'd said to him, low, as the guests filed in.

"I did, Mother."

"Good. Then the rest is only ceremony."

Four o'clock came, and the quartet started the processional.

Everyone stood.

Corinna appeared at the top of the aisle in white.

The dress was plain, high at the neck, with no train, and she carried no flowers.
