Chapter 24: Table for Four
The surgeon let us walk Mom as far as the double doors.
She went in on a gurney with her navy suit folded in a plastic bag and her cane across her chest.
"Don't look so grim," she told us. "I've waited two years for this appointment."
Corinna kissed her forehead.
I kissed her hand.
Then the doors swung shut, and the hall was suddenly very quiet.
The surgical waiting room had a vending machine, a television on mute, and one long table bolted to the floor.
Corinna sat down at it in her wedding dress.
I sat across from her in my green one.
Sullivan stood at the window, and after a minute he said he'd find coffee, and went, and did not come back for a long time.
He knew we needed the table to ourselves.
"You're still angry," Corinna said.
"Yes."
"Good."
"Don't say good."
"I'm saying it because it's true." She turned the paper cup in her hands. "You should be angry for as long as you need."
I looked at her hands.
They were her hands, the ones that had braided my hair when I was six and signed my report cards when Mom was too tired.
