Chapter 12: Not Pity

Wayne was down the ladder in ten seconds with his shirt tucked and his hat in his hand.

I lay in the hay with my heart slamming and listened to him talk to the vet about a lame gelding, in a voice so level it scared me.

I dressed in the dark loft and went out the back.

Hank found me in the kitchen an hour later, pouring coffee with a hand that would not stay still.

He took the pot away from me, set it down, and looked at my buttons.

I had done them up wrong.

"Boss tell you I've got eyes?" he said.

"Hank."

"I've been on this place forty years." He pulled out a chair. "I watched that man not look at you since March. Every day he found a new reason to look at the barn."

My face burned.

"I'm not going to lecture you," Hank said. "You're eighteen and he's a grown man. If you were my business I'd have said so a week ago."

He tapped the table with one bent finger.

"Your mother would've skinned you both. Then she'd have asked what took you so long."

I laughed, and then I put my face in my hands.

"He'll end it," I said. "He's out there right now deciding to end it."

"Probably," Hank said. "Don't let him."

He was right.

Wayne came in at dusk and stood in the doorway of the kitchen and would not sit down.

"This can't happen again," he said. "I'm thirty-nine. I raised you. I stood at your mother's grave and promised her."

"Promised her what?"

"That you'd be all right."

"I am all right." I stood up. "I'm better than all right. You had your face between my legs this afternoon, and I've never been so all right in my life."

He flinched. He shut his eyes.

"I'm not asking your permission," I said. "I'm asking when."

"Sage."

"When, Wayne?"

The silence went on until the refrigerator kicked on and made us both jump.
