Chapter 13: Naughty Night Things

Dessa lifted her coffee mug to me and smiled.

"Morning, Sage," she said at the bunk room door. "Nice shirt. It's a lot bigger than you."

"Dessa."

"I didn't see a thing. I was looking at the pasture the whole time." She stepped aside. "Hank says I earn my bunk by learning the books. Can you show me the stud book?"

She wasn't smiling now.

"You photographed the first three pages in my kitchen," I said.

"I know I did." Her chin came up. "Daddy asked for them. I'm done sending him anything. If you don't trust me, keep the book in the house safe, and I'll earn it."

I looked at her for a long moment.

"Mucking starts at five," I said. "Come get a fork."

She came, and she didn't complain once.

That afternoon Wayne sat me down at the office desk with the ranch ledger and the stud book side by side.

He taught me Cinder's sire and dam, and which mares crossed clean and which crossed too close.

"This column is what we spend," he said. "This one is what we clear. Eighty percent of a breeding program is paperwork and patience."

I didn't hear half of it.

He was leaning over my shoulder to point at a number, and his forearm lay along mine on the desk.

He wasn't touching me anywhere else, and my whole body knew exactly where he was.

"Sage," he said quietly. "Pay attention."

"I am," I said.

"You're looking at my mouth."

"I'm looking at the page."

"Page is down here," he said.

I laughed, and he nearly did.

Then Hank came in with the farrier, and Wayne straightened up and went to wash his hands.

That night I waited until the house was dark.

I took a soft cotton lead rope off the hook by the back door.

I crossed the yard in my boots and his flannel and nothing else.
