Chapter 15: A Long Lens

Wayne's POV

Sage fell asleep on the office couch with the university envelope on her chest.

I stood over her for a long time and didn't touch her.

I had signed away the ranch, paid four years of tuition and arranged her whole future in one week.

And I had still ended up on top of her on my own desk.

I was a man who made plans and then broke every one of them.

At five I pulled a blanket over her and drove to the Kenyon place.

Lyle's yard was already busy.

Three of his hands were loading hay onto a flatbed, and his foreman stood by the shop with a clipboard.

Lyle himself was on the porch of the barn office with a cup of coffee.

"Wayne," he said. "You're up early."

"You were at my gate last night with your lights off."

"Was I?" He smiled. "Mind your tone. I've got people working."

I looked at the hands. Every one of them had gone quiet and was watching.

"I want to make you an offer," I said.

"I'm listening," Lyle said.

I had rehearsed it on the drive, and it tasted like ashes.

"Give me until the hearing. Don't touch the note. I'll pay you the interest on the whole hundred eighty every week out of the stud fees, and I'll give you first call on every colt Cinder sires for five years."

"That's generous," Lyle said.

"It's everything I've got."

"No, it isn't." Lyle sipped his coffee. "You've got something better. Come inside."
