Chapter 16: The Lawyer's Office
Sage's POV
I woke on the office couch at seven with a blanket over me and the truck gone from the yard.
Wayne had left no note.
I looked at the university envelope on the floor and at the receipt on top, and my anger came back clean and cold.
Then I looked at the cream envelope I had carried in my back pocket for three weeks.
I took it out of my jeans, still sealed.
Hank was at the pump house when I crossed the yard.
"Where's Wayne?" I asked.
"Left before light. Didn't say." He studied my face. "Where are you going?"
"Pinedale."
"You want company?"
"No," I said. "I want to do this one myself."
The law office was above the pharmacy on Pine Street.
The lawyer was a gray-haired woman in reading glasses who had known my mother for twenty years.
She came out of her inner room as soon as the receptionist said my name.
"You didn't open it," she said.
"No."
"I told you on the phone the morning after your birthday what was in it."
"I know." I set the envelope on her desk. "I needed to hear it in this room."
She slit it with a silver knife and spread the pages.
"Your mother's will," she said. "Read paragraph four."
I read it out loud, because my voice was the only thing I could still control.
"I leave the land and house known as Gentry Ridge, including the creek and every water right attached to it, to my daughter Sage Marie Gentry, to hold outright on her eighteenth birthday."
